Wind River Reservation, Wyoming

"It's still a major concern, but the (Washaki) dam is safe," said Deputy Tribal Water Engineer Gary Collins. Water is still seeping through at about a gallon every eight minutes. The situation will be monitored as the water is raised a couple inches each day, he said. "Earthen reservoirs seep," he said. "The dam has seeped since it was built in the 1930s. That's expected due to the glacial materials that underlie the reservoir. They have permeability." Washakie Reservoir is being refilled to its normal level after the seep toward the bottom was patched. Officials had lowered the reservoir 4 feet beginning June 2, and a berm made of impervious fabric and gravel was built over the leak.
