In my previous life before becoming a history instructor at a junior college, I spent almost 20 years working in government and politics. I worked in the U.S. House of Representatives, for the Texas Attorney General as a special assistant and in the Texas House of Representatives for two different legislators.
Phillip Baker-Shenk’s article, “Elevating Indian Policy in the Obama Administration” in the Jan. 14 issue [Vol. 28, Iss. 32] is both timely and extremely important for the various American Indian nations. His advice is sound and to the point and should be heeded by all concerned with the future of the various nations. A narrative that he speaks of is so important and the political advice he gives is so important for success to be achieved. The leaders of the various nations, as well as all members of the many American Indian communities around the nation, should study his words carefully.
Mr. Baker-Shenk is to be commended for his thoughtful analysis of the problems and opportunities that face us in the near and distant future.
