- American Indian populations face some daunting numbers when it comes to health and health care. The infant mortality rate among Indians, for example, is 150 percent greater than it is among Caucasian infants. Indians are 2.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes. Their life expectancy is five years lower than that of the rest of the U.S. population.
