The cleanup costs for a July 2010 oil spill are still rising: Enbridge Energy Partners LP increased its estimate for a Michigan spill to $550 million, up 28 percent, Reuters reported Jan. 14.

The extra costs come after the U.S. affiliate of Canada’s Enbridge Inc. reviewed its spending and learned more about the cost of environmental remediation and spill-site restoration.

Last July 26 a ruptured line leaked more than 20,000 barrels of oil into a nearby river system, and the line was closed for nine weeks. Although most costs will be covered  by insurance, the $13 million revenue loss won’t be, the company told Reuters. In addition the cleanup total does not include spill-related fines or penalties.
