Surge in Suicides on Crow Creek Reservation Incites Leaders to Turn to Outside Agencies
The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Bureau of Indian Affairs and Crow Creek Circles of Care organization are working with the Indian Health Services’ suicide prevention team to curb a recent rise in suicides and attempted suicides on the central South Dakota reservation.
A suicide task force has been created to address the issue, which Tolly Estes, an IHS community health representative, attributes to poverty, according to The Daily Republic.
The move comes shortly after two young mothers died the week of Christmas, and three youths and one man attempted suicide over the holiday season, Chairman Duane Big Eagle told News From Indian Country.
