More Charges Against Pedophile Priest
Two more counts of indecent assault have been filed against Eric DeJaeger, the Belgium-born priest accused of molesting children in Igloolik between 1978 and 1982, CBC News reports.
This is in addition to the three counts of indecent assault and three of buggery that he already faces from those years, the CBC said in a Jan. 24 story. He has also now been charged with failure to appear in court because he skipped his hearing on the initial charges in 1995 and fled to Belgium.
He remained there until abuser-priest scandals flushed him out earlier this month and he was deported.
Dejaeger faces nine charges in total. He is being held in Iqaluit.
The Nunatsiaq News reports that more charges may be imminent.
“The lay of the land has begun to shift,” Crown lawyer Paul Bychok told a justice of the peace in Iqaluit, the Nunatsiaq News reported. “The Crown expects charges to arise in a number of Canadian jurisdictions.”
