Inuvik is next on the travel agenda of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) members, as they meet with residents on Monday March 28 to prepare for the National Event being hosted by this Northwest Territories hamlet in June.

These National Events, part of the TRC's mandate, "are intended to share and record the truth of those people affected by the Residential School System," the commission said in a release. The northern National Event, in Inuvik, NWT, from June 28 to July 1, 2011, will offer "a unique experience from Canada’s North," the TRC said.

At the March 28 information session, TRC Commissioner Marie Wilson will explain to residents what the community can expect from the experience and how people can participate. The meeting will be held at Ingamo Hall, Inuvik, NWT from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mountain Time. Soup and bannock will be served.

The TRC is holding testimonial meetings all across the north as a way of gathering information that can help the nation come to terms with the residential schools system, which tore children and families apart for more than a century. As part of a settlement between Canada's aboriginals and the federal government, the commission was formed and charged with informing all Canadians what happened during the 150-year schools era so as to "guide and inspire a process of reconciliation and renewed relationships based on mutual understanding and respect, the TRC said.

In early March a forum was held to gather information from world experts on archiving and recovering from national episodes such as these.
