Cheap Gas for Mohegan Sun Employees Only
The 8,000 Mohegan Sun employees can pump affordable gasoline at a station slated to open this summer.
The gas station will be built on nearly an acre of land opposite the casino's employees-only Trading Cove Parking Lot. Six gasoline and four diesel fuel pumps, plus a small attendant's "shack" will be available to all who work at the Uncasville, Connecticut-based casino, owned by the Mohegan Tribe, reported The Day. Employees will access the pumps with a special badge or card, said Ray Pineault, Mohegan Sun's executive vice president and chief operating officer.
The proposed discount gas station for employees was announced by tribal officials in September after the layoff of 475 employees to reduce cost-cutting measures. Officials hoped to offer gas to employees at 5 to 30 cents a gallon less than the going rate, reported The Day.
The gas station was already on the agenda before the layoffs occurred, said Pineault. "We're always trying to give value back to the employees whenever we can," he told The Day. "Now, with the rising gas prices, it will be a very good benefit. It'll lessen the blow of the commute."
The next step is negotiating a price with a distributor on an unbranded product at a discount, Pineault said. "The price will be fluctuating every day," he told The Day, adding that he could not predict how much the discount would be.
Although the Mohegan Tribe's reservation encircles the gas-station site, the land is technically a tribe-owned parcel, or not trust land. This means the gas station will pay local regulation fees and taxes. Site plans and a special permit for the project have been approved by the town's Planning and Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals, said Thomas Sanders, the assistant planner and zoning enforcement officer, to The Day.
For patrons or non-employees, gas is available at the Mohegan Sun-operated 24-hour Mobil gas station on Mohegan Sun Boulevard. Patrons can pay in cash or redeem the player's club points earned at the gaming resort.
