Mohawk Bingo Palace May Move After Decade
Mohawk Bingo Palace may relocate and share the space at the newer Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, located just a mile east. In a referendum on April 30, tribal members will vote on a potential $75 million expansion of the casino to include a hotel and a larger casino, including the machines from the Bingo Palace. "I do support a hotel being built, because there were feasibility studies conducted and these feasibility studies clearly indicated a hotel project constructed immediately adjacent to the casino would be a good decision," Lorraine M. White, a lawyer and former tribal chief, told the WatertownDailyTimes.com. "I just have some questions with respect to the addition of the Class II gaming adjacent to the casino itself."
Bingo games, played on a machine or by hand, classify as Class II gaming. Gaming machines, including slots, card games, craps and roulette, fall into Class III.
A hotel near the casino has been in discussion for years, although previous plans were delayed indefinitely due to the weak economy. Current hotel plans include 200 guest rooms, White told the WatertownDailyTimes.com.
