Vermont Tribes Receive State Recognition
Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin today signed bills granting state recognition to the Elnu Abenaki and the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation. Both tribes have been fighting for recognition for years.
Both tribes, the Elnu from Jamaica, Southern Vermont and Coosuk, Brownington, Northern Vermont, met the criteria documented by membership and genealogical records.
The applications were reviewed by independent scholars but are still questioned by some in the Abenaki community as to the process and legitimacy of the tribes, according to the Associated Press.
