Darwin McCoy Resigns as Sault Tribe Chairman

According to a post on the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians website on May 10, Darwin “Joe” McCoy announced his immediate resignation at a meeting Tuesday night.

McCoy was the elected leader of the 39,000-member tribe for almost three years.

In a letter to tribal Board of Directors McCoy said his decision was based on “circumstances beyond my control.”

Following tribal Constitution, Lana Causley, vice chairperson, will serve as interim chairperson. The tribal board can decide to either appoint a successor according to the Constitution or call an advisory special election under Tribal Law.
