Plans for the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum do not include a Shinnecock Indian casino, county leaders and Islanders owner Charles Wang said today, reported Southampton Patch.

But negotiations with the county remain on the table for the Southampton tribe, prospectively at Belmont Park.

The Shinnecock Indians of Southampton, federally recognized as the nation’s 565th tribe last fall, had discussed purchasing 40 acres of the 77-acre Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum at $120 million in a public-private deal for a gaming facility, according to WPIX-TV.

Bloomberg reported May 10 that Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano would confirm plans today to pursue a Shinnecock Indian casino and sports-entertainment destination center at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, home to the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders, in Uniondale, New York. However, the tribe will look elsewhere to build a gaming facility.

"The Shinnecock Nation has always made clear that we are ready to partner with communities that want to partner with us, in both Nassau and Suffolk counties, as we pursue economic opportunities for our people that also provide jobs for our neighbors," Shinnecock Tribal Trustees Chairman Randy King said in a statement Wednesday. "We welcome the support from Nassau County Executive Mangano and Senators [Dean] Skelos and [Jack] Martins. We are prepared to discuss siting a facility at Belmont with the state, the local community and all the stakeholders there."
