The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported that 22-year old Marjorie Tahbone, Inupiaq/Kiowa, was named the 2011 Miss Indian World at the Gathering of Naitons in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Tahbone grew up in Nome, Alaksa, an active student who participated in Native youth organizations and spoke at conferences as well as leading her student council.  Summer weekends were spent hanging fish at fish to dry at her family's camp and working as a fishery technician, helping to restore Nome's rivers.

As the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported, this wasn't Tahbone's first crown.  She had recently been crowned Miss Arctic Native Brotherhood in Nome and Miss World Eskimo-Indian at the Olympics in Fairbanks.  Tahbone took her winning ways down to New Mexico, where she was crowned Miss Indian World at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Tahbone can look forward to a very busy year of traveling, where she'll speak to large groups and small, via public gatherings and private meetings all over the country, representing all the Nations.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that during the competition, Tahbone's demonstration of Alaska Native games, such as the one-arm reach and-foot high kick, sealed the deal for her crown.  She didn't win a single category outright, but rather scored highly in ever field, from public speaking and essay writing to "Miss Congeniality."

"I can't even describe it, it was so crazy," Tahbone told the paper.  Her year is only going to get crazier, too.

Good luck Marjorie, and job well done!
