All inpatient dietitians at the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) hospital achieved nutrition support certification through the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC), making ANMC the first hospital in Alaska to have 100 percent of its dietitians certified.

“We are proud of our dietitians who set out to achieve this distinction to ensure better patient and quality outcomes,” said Gary Shaw, senior vice president and ANMC hospital administrator, in a statement. “Their dedication is just another example of ANMC’s ability to provide the best and most advanced care to our patients and is in line with our vision of helping Alaska Natives become the healthiest people in the world.”

The NBNSC is an independent credentialing board established in 1984 by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN). Nutrition support certification is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated the level of knowledge and skill required in the nutrition profession. Certified professionals are recognized as quality providers of nutrition support by the public, their colleagues and other members of the health care team.

In addition to the nutrition support certification, the ANMC inpatient dietitians also have a pediatric nutrition specialist and an oncology nutrition specialist certified through the American Dietetic Association’s Commission on Dietetic Registration.

“We are a highly motivated team and continue to strive to provide the best, safest and highest level of nutrition to our patients,” said Samantha Maloney, ANMC’s medical nutrition therapy manager. “Patient safety and quality nutrition delivery remains our top priority.”

ANMC is jointly managed by the nonprofit the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and the Southcentral Foundation.
