Michael Woesthoff will be the director of communications for the National Indian Education Association

Michael Woestehoff, who previously served as communications coordinator for the National Indian Education Association, was recently named director of communications for the organization.

“Michael’s communication’s expertise is needed to capture and tell all of the incredible stories of what we collectively are accomplishing in educating our children and building strong and healthy communities,” said NIEA Executive Director Colin Kippen in a press release. “His knowledge of Native communities, national education policies, and effective communication techniques will help us raise awareness of Native education and advocate for policy changes where they are most needed.”

Woestehoff, 28, is from Ganado, Arizona on the Navajo Nation. He is currently finishing up work on his master’s in public relations and corporate communications from Georgetown University. He most recently worked as a communications officer at New West Technologies, a Native American-owned renewable energy company in Maryland. He previously worked with the NIEA from 2007-1010.

“When I began my career here in Washington, D.C., I discovered that there was a real need for Native PR professionals. We need to be the ones to tell our own story. In this town, and in general, there is a real lack of education of Native people. Interaction through communication is key to understanding our priorities and who we are,” Woestehoff said in the release. “I am glad to rejoin NIEA to continue to build that communications connection with Indian country.”
