‘Slapping Medicine Man’ — Slap Shtick from the 1491s

With "Slapping Medicine Man," the hits keep coming from the 1491s. We've previously spotlighted their more serious clips, "Geronimo E-KIA" and "Smiling Indians," but the 1491s is, by self-definition, "a sketch comedy group, based in the wooded ghettos of Minnesota and buffalo grass of Oklahoma. They are a gaggle of Indians chock full of cynicism and splashed with a good dose of indigenous satire."

So let's have some of that comedy. Forget your troubles, come on, get slappy!

In the video, medicine man Noah Ellis has a painful cure for what ails Tito Ybarra (Chippewa), Dallas Goldtooth (Mdewakanton Dakota and Di?e), and Ryan Red Corn (Osage).

(Incidentally, Red Corn was in Washington, DC last week, speaking at the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs' "Oversight Hearing on Setting the Standard: Domestic Policy Implications of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples." Right on!)

I like this video - it's so irreverent! We Indians were unshakable at one point in history but these days the college-educated politically-correct crowd and the White Indians have told us to be offended by this and that, to protest the use of the word "Indian," to be offended by mascots and even to be offended if anyone worships our Creator (I agree sacred ceremonies must be performed only by priests, rabbis and those authorized within the Indian community but everyone should be permitted to worship any Creator they chose). Such Indians also deserve a slap. Other Indians among us who deserve a slap: - those who abuse Elders (elder abuse is a very serious but unrecognized problem in Indian communities. As someone who is an elder, this issue is very important to me) - those who abuse women - those who abuse children - those who bully other Indians - those who whip out CDIB cards and think a colonial government's ratification is what makes them Indian, those who identify themselves as American, those who fight profiteering wars of the American government and kill millions of indigenous peoples around the globe, those who honor the American flag, those who are proud to be Americanized - those Indians who are ashamed to be Indian and are ashamed of other Indians - those Indians who refuse to share their wealth with other Indians - those Indians who disrespect the environment (see how many Indians trash the powwow grounds!) - those Indians who are quick to judge others and label tribes who are struggling for recognition as "wannabes." - those who refuse to learn their language - those who refuse to take any interest in their dying cultures - those Indians who say "I will marry a White but I don't want to marry an Indian"

I think this video is going to reach many people. I thank the producers & comics who had the creativity and the bravery to "go there". Too often we don't recognize that our behaviors consist of "blaming" that we have a modern culture of blame and victimization. It's time to shape up or just get slapped up by the SLAPPIN" Medicine Man!

Our humor is our medicine. It is why we are strong today; the gift of Indian humor has saved us and gotten us through some of the heaviest times...this is awesome!!
