Discovering Tubatulabal Language and Artifacts in Washington
Last month four women of the Tubatulabal Tribe—of the Kern River Valley in California—made the trek to Washington, D.C. to research their language and meet with officials about the tribe's ongoing request for federal recognition. What they found while researching their language brought tears of joy to their eyes.
The ladies discovered a hard copy of journals written by C Hart Merriam, a biologist who documented the Tubatulabal language as well as geology and natural water paths of the Kern Valley in the early 1900s.
The group also met with Lee Fleming, director for the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Federal Acknowledgement, to learn more about getting federal recognition for their tribe.
