PETA Spikes ‘Sweat Lodges Can Kill You’ Billboard Campaign

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has stopped its billboard campaign in Sedona, Arizona that was going to relate the deaths of three people at a sweat lodge ceremony under the leadership of self-help guru James Arthur Ray with the fatal consequences of people leaving their dogs inside their vehicles in hot weather.

Ray was convicted of negligent homicide on June 22, 2011 for the deaths of Kirby Brown, 38, James Shore, 40, and Liz Neuman, 49. The victims paid $9,695 each to participate in Ray’s “Spiritual Warrior” retreat near Sedona on October 8, 2009, in which Ray reportedly urged participants to stay inside and scolded them to overcome their weakness. Following the ceremony, another 18 people were hospitalized for burns, respiratory arrest, kidney failure, loss of consciousness and dehydration.

PETA planned to compare the devastating effects of heat on humans and dogs. Its billboard campaign was going to feature a distressed dog in a parked car with the caption, "A sweat lodge can kill you. A parked car can kill him. Dogs overheat faster than humans."

But family representatives of two of the sweat lodge victims contacted PETA and asked the animal rights organization to stop the campaign.

One family member of a sweat lodge victim commented on the quote saying, "[T]hey get what PETA is trying to accomplish, but trivializing the deaths of three people isn't the way to go about it," reported KPHO.

PETA decided to honor the families' wishes, although they "will continue to bring attention to the truly life-and-death danger of leaving dogs in parked cars in summer," said Tracy Reiman, PETA executive vice president.

"Our billboard was intended to turn a tragic and preventable occurrence into something positive by stopping further tragic and preventable heatstroke deaths," states PETA.org. "However, we understand the concerns of the family and will not be putting up our billboard in Sedona."

PETA's press release explained that it regularly receives reports of dogs being locked in cars for long periods of time on hot days. "On a 90-degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach 160 degrees in 10 minutes," PETA warns in a blog.

PETA will replace the ad with a new quote, "Too hot for spot? In hot weather, leave dogs at home," with an animation of a dog in a vehicle.

A WARRIOR’S CHALLENGE TO THE NATIVE AMERICANS As a TRUE bodybuilding martial arts warrior who is ready to die RIGHT NOW I CHALLENGE YOU NATIVE AMERICANS You say James Arthur Ray is not spiritual You say he is a charlatan and a fraud I HEREBY CHALLENGE YOU …to make YouTube videos of your MOST ENLIGHTENED Native American spiritual master. I challenge you to upload those videos of him teaching onto YouTube and let’s compare them to the YouTube videos of James Arthur Ray. Let the whole world know the difference between a truly “spiritual” man and James Arthur Ray. Let’s all see what you’ve got, you casino grubbers!! Oh, you feel James Arthur Ray has made too much money and you have not in your Native American casinos? Do the people who lose their money in your casinos gain greater spiritual enlightenment than at a James Arthur Ray workshop? Really? Let the world see your greatest spiritual hero because I HAVE SEEN NOTHING OF HIM YET!!!! Let the world compare those YouTube videos side by side so that we can all clearly see the difference between a truly spiritual person and a spiritual charlatan and fraud Oh, I sense you ‘gulping’. What’s the matter? Don’t you have any hero who is more spiritual than James Arthur Ray? You MUST, right? PUT UP OR SHUT UP!!!! If you don't release my comment it means YOU KNOW you have no great spiritual leader who can spins rings of truth around James Arthur Ray. By not releasing my post you admit defeat!!! If YOU build a giant swimming pool on YOUR property and charge people BIG MONEY to use it. The responsibility is YOURS to have a lifeguard on duty. It is not the responsibility of the people who are paying YOU to use YOUR POOL on YOUR PROPERTY to bring a lifeguard! If Mr Hamilton had done what he should have done and had emergency people on duty for those two-hours NO ONE WOULD HAVE DIED!

Guess they finally realize that dogs would not be dumb enough to sit in a hot sweat lodge and die without jumping around barking, howling and screaming. Only HUMANS are that dumb!

I am not a white man. I have A LOT of South American (human sacrifice) blood in me. I am a seasoned bodybuilding martial arts TRUE WARRIOR who is ready to die right here and now! Kiss you family goodbye first before you test me on this because you won't be going home. From this standpoint I boldly say that you Native Americans and I have at least one thing in common: If we attend a sweat lodge ceremony and we feel it is too hot in the sweat lodge and we can't properly breathe WE WILL GET OUT AND STAY OUT!!! If James Arthur Ray or ANYONE would stand in my way I would kick him in the nuts so hard his balls would be lodged in his throat! WE ARE NOT DUMBER THAN DOGS!!!! I'm sure we can agree on that

It seems to me that if you Native Americans have a spiritual leader whom you are all convinced is more "spiritual" and has more useful information to share than James Arthur Ray there would already be videos of him on YouTube. Obviously, you have NO ONE who can compare with the useful information James Arthur Ray has to share with the world. You think you are "spiritual" and you can't back it up with real proof that will spin rings of true spiritual around James Arthur Ray. Pathetic!

I rarely ever watch the news, but I just so happened to see the recording of Casey Anthony being released from jail. She left the facility to the jeers of protestors and, supposedly, she has received (((MANY))) death threats. I sense this is basically what would have happened if James Arthur Ray was found not guilty of all charges against him. I sense it was the strategy of the Spirit to have him found not guilty of manslaughter and guilty of negligent homicide. It is beyond all reasonable doubt that there are many signs of corruption in the James Arthur Ray trial. All those legal violations from the prosecution that judge Darrow let them get away with tell the story of possible bribery and corruption There is evidence that Mr Hamilton hated James Arthur Ray's guts and wanted revenge. That's why he deliberately had no emergency personnel on hand for the sweat lodge ceremony. It was Mr Hamilton's responsibility to have those emergency people on hand for the use of HIS sweat lodge on HIS property, period! There is evidence that Ted Mercer knew it was not hot enough in the sweat lodge to kill those people. That's why the first thing he said to investigators was that he thought it was the wood. In other words, Ted Mercer was saying he thought is was some sort of toxic poisoning. NO ONE was more qualified than Ted Mercer to know whether or not it was too hot in the sweat lodge. If he felt it was too hot that would have been the first thing he would have said to the investigators. Made practically airtight with a rubberized tarp and made with too many layers of moving blankets (unnatural fibers) and vinyl tarps, there is a great body of evidence that the sweat lodge Angel Valley built would be considered a death trap by sweat lodge experts from around the world Yes, it was an act of mercy on the part of the Spirit to have Mr Ray convicted of negligent homicide so that he can gather all the evidence he needs to expose the corruption and the truth of how sweat lodge experts, from around the world, feel about the Angel Valley death trap

You have to really THINK about this: Ted Mercer could have EASILY, instinctively, said to the investigators who initially interviewed him that Mr Ray wanted the sweat lodge superhot and so we gave him what he wanted and that is why those people died. Instead, Ted Mercer instinctively said that he felt it was the wood. Why is that? It was INSTINCT! Ted Mercer KNEW it was not hot enough in the sweat lodge to kill people. He instinctively felt it had to be some sort of toxic poisoning! TED MERCER KNEW THIS!!!!! And he should know more than ANYONE who was at that sweat lodge ceremony that day whether or not the sweat lodge was hot enough to kill people. Yes, even more than James Arthur Ray. After-all, Ted built the bloody thing!!!!

Hey, any coach who is worth his salt will do his best to push you beyond what you think you are capable of or he’s not a great coach! It’s up to YOU to decide when you truly can’t handle any more. Only fools run marathons until they drop dead.

Angel Valley owner Mr Hamilton KNEW their were problems with prior JRI sweat lodge ceremonies. It was HIS responsibility to have emergency personnel on hand for those two-hours of the JRI sweat lodge ceremony while they used HIS SWEAT LODGE. Instead Mr Hamilton took no special safety precautions WHATSOEVER! As a result three people died. Was this “harmless” as well???? We all need to face reality here: If Mr Hamilton had done what he should have done NO ONE WOULD HAVE DIED!!!! That’s a fact! Consider this
