Board of Education Approves Teaching Standards for Native American History


The South Dakota State Board of Education approved standards—which outline grade-specific activities—for teaching Native American history and culture yesterday.

In 2007, the Indian Education Act mandated the curricula development in South Dakota.

According to the Associated Press, the state's governor, Dennis Daugaard said "students are more engaged when they find the curriculum relevant." He also said having an understanding of the state's Native American history is important to all South Dakota residents, Native and non-Native.
