Native Public Media Gets Seat on FCC Consumer Advisory Committee
Traci Morris, director of operations for Native Public Media (NPM) an organization that aims to strengthen and expand the Native voice in media, will represent tribal interests on the Federal Communications Commission’s Consumer Advisory Committee.
The Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC) helps "amplify the voices of many of the least-served communities and constituencies in current policy debates," said Sascha Meinrath, director of the New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative, an NPM partner.
Formed in 2004, NPM uses media to advance Indian economic development and preserve Native languages and culture, in addition to facilitating tribal community engagement.
Broadband penetration is at less than ten percent in tribal communities, and Morris' appointment to the CAC will help narrow the digital divide and strengthen the voice of American Indians at the policy table, noted Loris Taylor, NPM president and chief executive officer.
“As the representative of Native Public Media, [Traci] will be a voting member of the CAC, helping us to ensure that all Americans have access to modern communications services," said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.
“As the only Native representative, I am honored and humbled to be chosen for this committee and look forward to working with other members,” stated Morris.
