Math and Culture Focus of Native American Summer Program in Tacoma

The Tacoma Public Schools Indian Education K-5 summer program emphasized math skills and cultural enhancement for Native American students.

“We placed emphasis on learning math facts to strengthen each student’s ability to succeed in classroom activities during the school year,” said David Syth, Indian Education coordinator, in a press release. “After math skills and drills each day, our students had opportunities to work on projects designed to enhance their cultural knowledge and appreciation for their native history.”

Some of those activities included visits from special guests like Jennifer Hallberg from the Puyallup Tribe Historical Preservation Department and storyteller Elaine Grinnell from the Jamestown S’klallam Tribe.

“Our days were filled with hard work and fun, culminating with a trip to the Washington State History Museum where we were able to see the rich history of our Northwestern tribes and how Native culture is a vital part of Washington’s unique character,” Syth said. “It was a successful endeavor and thank you to all who participated."
