Agriculture Writing Competition for Native American Women and Youth

ICTMN Staff
10/7/11

What should Native American agriculture look like in 25 years? That’s the question being asked of young Native American men and women who would like to enter the 2011 Native Women & Youth in Ag Annual Writing Competition.

If you are a member of a federally recognized tribe in grades nine through 12, you are eligible.

The announcement for the competition suggests Native American students talk to their elders about what the last 25 years of agriculture have been like and then hypothesize about what they think the next 25 will look like.

Three finalists will be announced during the second week of November and will win an all-expense paid trip, which includes one chaperone to the 2011 Intertribal Agriculture Council annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada from December 5-9. The winners will also serve as Agriculture Ambassadors for 2011 and 2012.

Submissions must be three to six pages long, with three to five sentences about the writer; they must be typed, have one inch margins, be double spaced, in 12 point font and include three to five sources.

Submissions will be judged on creativity, quality of sources, quality of grammar, spelling and punctuation, organization of information, entry length, documentation of sources and appropriate information to the topic.

Entries must also include a separate sheet with the student’s name, address, telephone number, e-mail, school they attend and tribal affiliation.

Submissions must be postmarked no later than November 4, 2011 and sent to:
