11-11-11 Possibly Linked to Mayan Apocalypse

Some numerologists say repetitively glancing at your clock and seeing 11:11 is more than a coincidence—it's a spiritual sign.

LiveScience reports that Friday's date 11/11/11 might actually be tied to the Mayan calendar and Apocalypse. The ancient Mayan long-count calendar ends on December 21, 2012, a date prophesized to deliver both doom and spiritual renewal. (Because Mayans tended to see time as cyclical, the end of the calendar might have been viewed as a rebirth or new beginning, John Hoopes, a scholar of Mayan history at the University of Kansas, told LiveScience.) The date 12/21/12 is likely linked to 11/11/11 mythology, said Hoopes, because the exact time for the winter solstice on December 21 is 11:11 Universal Time.

"It's essentially based on the notion of synchronicities," which are meaningful coincidences, Hoopes told LiveScience. In a nutshell, everyone has a psychological tendency to search for meaning in random patterns. While Hoopes recognizes the reason people connect the date 11/11/11 to the Mayan prophesized doomsday, he remains a skeptic.

"If it seems like the 2012 mythology was thought up by people on drugs, it's because it was," Hoopes said. Still, many retreats throughout South America will celebrate today's numerology: 11.11.11 and its associated spiritual significance, according to many advertisements online, such as Mind Body Spirit Journeys, led by Jorge Luis Delgado, a knowledgeable escort in spiritual Peruvian culture and history. "He has trained from an early age with the Kallahuayas Shamans of Lake Titicaca, as well as with the Q’ero Elders of the Cusco region. Jorge speaks fluent English, as well as Quechua and Aymara, the indigenous languages of the Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca regions," his profile states.

At 11:11 a.m. on Friday, Delgado was scheduled to lead some believers to stand before the Pyramid of the Sun, the largest building in Teotihuacan, which is a massive archaeological site in the Basin of Mexico, just 30 miles northeast of Mexico City, to receive the cosmic energy of the day.
