Native American Studies Minor in the Making
Proponents of a Native Peoples of the Americas minor at the University of Maryland are finally getting somewhere. They've been trying for decades to get the minor up and running and finally have a formal proposal to show for it.
According to The Diamondback, American studies professor Nancy Struna volunteered to draft the proposal and plans on presenting it to university officials by the end of the semester.
To gain further steam, officials will want to make sure the program will be utilized by students since only 32 at the university are registered as Native American or Alaska Indian.
But those Native American students feel the minor is needed to increase cultural understanding at the school, which one called "a confused area in people's minds."
