State Immigration Laws on US High Court Radar
Border states such as Arizona, feel they are suffering disproportionately due to illegal immigration and feel the federal government is not doing enough to address the situation. On Monday, December 12, the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would rule on an Arizona law that is politically charged and targets illegal immigrants according to an Associated Press report.
The case comes from President Barack Obama’s administration’s efforts to control immigration issues as the administration argues it is a federal issue and not a state issue.
The topic of illegal immigration is already playing into the 2012 elections as a hot topic among Republican candidates and will be an issue for Obama who will seek a second term in November. An issue where the opposition see little improvement in dealing with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States.
