Humble Introduction to Robert Chanate
“There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.”
—The Bible. Juan Baptiste. About a guy named “Jesus” (pronounced “Hay-seuss”).
You Skins are not ready.
See, I’m about to unleash a beast on you all—a Native writer who is SO amazing and SO prolific … his name is Robert Chanate, and he is undoubtedly the most interesting Indian man in the world (which means that he is the most interesting man in the world period, as long as you don’t count Easter Islanders. Because they’re just really interesting as a rule. That’s just not a fair comparison).
Robert defeated ALL of the Iron Chefs cooking only with commodities. His Indian car is a Rolls Royce with bumper stickers all around it and sweetgrass hanging from the rear view mirror. There are members of animals groups that are proud members of the “Robert Chanate” Clan; they proudly wear a tattoo of his form on their chests.
Yes, I said it: the most interesting Indian man in the world.
Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming Robert—he will delight you weekly and give Indian Country another strong voice that speaks for Indian people, not at Indian people or over Indian people. He is a member of the Kiowa Tribe. He works in community organizing. Most importantly, however, for our purposes he is a freakin’ amazing writer, and his work will appear in “The Thing About Skins” once a week.
We’re going to have fun—look for his column on Monday.
Gyasi Ross is a member of the Blackfeet Nation and his family also belongs to the Suquamish Nation.
