Just hours before the South Carolina debate, Texas Governor Rick Perry announced he is dropping out of the Republican presidential candidate race according to an article at CNN.com.

With Perry’s exit the GOP field slims to Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul.

Perry, according to Politico, is expected to endorse Gingrich. Gingrich has been quoted saying that South Carolina is a must win state and could use as much support as he can get to catch leader Romney.

Romney continues to build on his lead after the New Hampshire caucus and is now ahead of Gingrich by 14.8 points in the latest Real Clear Politics polls. Santorum follows with Paul at the end of the pack after Perry’s announcement.

In other GOP news, official results from the Iowa caucus came back with Santorum as the winner. In an article at CNN, Santorum finished with 34 more votes than Romney, though some results were missing and a full count may never be known.
