Princes the Camel, a New Jersey zoo based sports psychic, picks the Giants to win the Super Bowl

Wacky Wagers, Psychic Camels and Other Super Bowl Nonsense

Every year the elected officials who happen to live in the states being represented by their teams in the Super Bowl like to make friendly wagers with each other.  These are typically publicity stunt-type bets, a good way to gin up a little light, flattering press.  This year is no different as senators, mayors and governors from New York and New England are jumping on the "Hey, let's make a regionally-specific bet about a nationally televised sporting event!" bandwagon.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer, clearly rooting for the New York Giants, is betting New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a New England Patriots supporter, a round of beers...for the entire Senate (if they really wanted to appeal to their constituents, they wager would be a round of beers for everyone over 21 in their state!).  If the Giants prevail, Shaheen will have to provide every senator a brew from one of New York State's six craft breweries—Brown's, Brooklyn, Blue Point, Saranac, Captain Lawrence and Ithaca.  If the Patriots win, Schumer will be coughing up a bottle of New Hampshire's Smuttynose for his fellow Senators.

Schumer, a seasoned politician if ever there was one, used the Super Bowl as an opportunity to continue promoting his "I Love NY Brew" campaign. According to NBC, he's pushing to expand the reach of the New York brewer's market share. He then sent out a press release with some good old fashioned New York braggadocio: "When Big Blue brings Tom Brady and Bill Belichick to their knees, the entire U.S. Senate will understand why we love New York brew. Go Giants!"

Schumer must be feeling good about his odds knowing that Princess the camel has picked the Giants to win. Princess is a Bactrian camel and the 'star' of Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River, New Jersey.  If you think Princess the camel is not a serious football prognosticator, you should know she's got a lifetime record of 88-51, and has correctly picked the winner in five of the last six Super Bowls.  If you had her skills you could make a mint in Las Vegas.

Back to our elected officials.  New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is putting his bagels and cheesecake where his mouth is by betting these two New York City staples against Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick's bet of pies and chowder.  No word yet on whether the latter will be New England clam chowder (cream based) or Manhattan (clear broth, tomato based).  Cuomo has said that if the Giants win he'll donate the New England cuisine to the Food Bank Association of New York State.

And finally, the mayors of New York and Boston, Michael Bloomberg and Thomas Menino, respectively, are wagering a fully comped, and quite fancy, trip to each of their cities for a family of four from the winner's metropolis.

As the New York Post reports, if the Giants win, some of the things a New York family will enjoy will include a flight to Boston on Jet Blue, a two-night stay at the Ritz-Carlton, dinner for four at Legal Seafoods Harborside, four tickets to a performance at the Citi Performing Arts Center, and four box seats to see a Bruins or Celtics game at the TD Garden.

If the Patriots win, some of the fun Bloomberg has in store for a Boston family will be a Delta flight, a two-night stay at the Grand Hyatt, dinner for four at the Russian Tea Room, four club seats at a Rangers or Knicks game, four tickets to the Phantom of the Opera, and a ride with the captain on Statue Cruises to Liberty and Ellis Islands, with a VIP tour of Lady Liberty's crown.

If only our politicians were this efficient at actually governing.
