Boxing fans have the chance to witness history at the first U.S. Olympic Team Trials for women’s boxing, being held this week at the Kalispel’s Northern Quest Resort & Casino in Airway Heights, Washington, just outside of Spokane. This summer’s London Olympic Games will feature women’s boxing for the first time, and the U.S.’s top 24 female boxers are facing off for their shot to fight across the pond.

These groundbreaking trials feature eight boxers in each of the three Olympic weight classes during the seven-day competition. The tournament is a double elimination format with preliminary action beginning on February 13 and running through final round action on February 18 and 19 (if necessary).  All the competing pugilists earned their berths through an extensive qualifying process, which began a year ago.

The three trials winners will represent the United States in the lone international Olympic qualifier, the 2012 Women’s World Championships in May in China. The trio will have to finish in the top eight at the key international event to punch their ticket for London.

All the bouts this week are being held in the Pend Orielle Pavilion at the Northern Quest Resort, which opened in 2009 and is just minutes from downtown Spokane. It’s no surprise that USA Boxing selected the Kalispel Tribe to host the trials, given the extent of major fights their resort has successfully showcased.  Last month ESPN Friday Night Fights was in town to televise a sensational card featuring a WBO Intercontinental Junior Welterweight title fight main event between Ruslan Provodnikov and David Torres. And it doesn’t hurt that Northern Quest is a AAA Four Diamond-rated resort, a true champion.
