Phoenix's Fry Bread House Wins James Beard Award
The Fry Bread House in Phoenix was recently bestowed one of the highest honors in the food industry: a James Beard Award, reported AZCentral.com.
The James Beard Foundation (JBF) is a national nonprofit that hosts renowned chefs from around North America at its historic James Beard House in New York City’s Greenwich Village to prepare culinary feasts for its foodie members. JBF also offers several food and wine tastings throughout the country, as well as lectures, workshops and food-related art exhibits.
The JBF gave Fry Bread House one of its five prestigious "America's Classics" awards for 2012. Created in 1998, the award recognizes restaurants "beloved for quality food that reflects the character of the community"and for their "timeless appeal."
Cecelia Miller, a member of the Tohono O'odham Nation, opened Fry Bread House in 1992. She makes her famous, hand-stretched fry bread with the same recipe and techniques she learned in her childhood, topping it off with either red chile stew or chorizo and cheese. Dessert fry bread is smeared with butter and chocolate.
Miller's son, Fry Bread House manager Michael Perry, told AZCentral.com that the award is "a testament to my mother and her hard work. We wanted something for the community."
The 2012 JFB Awards will take place at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City on Monday, May 7. Tickets go on sale Monday, March 19. Contact the Awards Box Office at 914.231.6180.
