Native Student Publication Holding Water Rights Symposium
RED INK: A Native American Student Publication will be holding a fundraiser and water rights symposium tomorrow and Saturday.
The fundraiser and reception will be held Friday, March 23 at the Arizona State Museum from 6 to 9 p.m. Featured at this event will be NAMMY folk rock group Indigie Femme, guitarist/vocalist Regina Tsosie (Diné), violinist Nikki Procela (Yaqui), a live painting by Jaque Fragua (Jemez), and a reading by poet/writer Simon Ortiz (Acoma).
The Native Nations Water Rights Symposium will be held Saturday, March 24 on the University of Arizona campus in the Chavez Building, Room 110 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“By creating a symposium we invite representatives of Native nations, students and community members to speak about their concerns, successes and failures pertaining to water rights issues and begin a discussion between indigenous nations as well as educators, researchers and students,” said Jose Quintana, Kewa.
Quintana is a graduate student at the University of Arizona and the managing editor of RED INK.
“RED INK’s mission is to amplify Native voices that are marginalized by mainstream media,” he said. “In a political and racial climate like Tucson—where counter narratives to dominant ideas and values are under attack—RED INK’s mission has become more important than ever.”
A sustainable and clean water source has become an issue for all Native nations and communities.
“To our Lakota people, mni (water) is our first medicine, our first home. There are entire spiritual and social teachings that we learn as we grow up, our Lakota World View about water,” says Debra White Plume, an author and environmental advocate who will serve as the keynote speaker at the symposium, in an upcoming issue of RED INK. “Mni is our relative, and Lakota Law compels us to protect our relatives.”
The next issue of RED INK, in which the article appears, will be unveiled at the symposium.
