The Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association has awarded the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe with a prestigious national award for its economic development plan, according to a tribal press release.

The tribe, whose reservation is located 35 miles northeast of Reno, Nevada, formed its Pyramid Lake Economic Development Plan to create long term profit-making and employment opportunities, as well as to establish a high quality recreation area at Pyramid Lake for tribal members. The plan is broken down into seven key elements; they include: recreation and fishing, tribal enterprises, energy, good governance and education, agriculture and ranching, and tribal entrepreneurship.

A related second volume, the Investment and Management Plan, was drafted to establish the policy matters concerning the use of the Pyramid Lake Economic Development Fund for maximizing job creation and revenue.

“I would like to thank U.S. Senator Harry Reid and the entire Nevada Congressional delegation for their support, and I am also grateful to all of the other Federal agencies who have helped the Tribe adopt this plan,” said Tribal Chairman Wayne Burke. “We look forward to utilizing this award winning plan to create prosperity for the Tribe and to improve the quality of life for our Members today and in the future.”

The Pyramid Lake Economic Development Plan was written by Tribal Planner Scott Carey and was adopted unanimously by the tribal council in March 2011. The national awards panel that reviewed the plan was impressed with the tribe's overall effort, and particularly their perseverance in getting the plan adopted, the potential for real impact from the plan, and the reflection of local needs, goals, and tasks in the plan. The plan was also awarded the Outstanding Plan Award by the Nevada Chapter of the APA in 2011.

The Association honored the tribe with the 2012 Donald E. Hunter Excellence in Economic Development Planning Honorable Mention Award on April 16 during the 2012 National Conference of the American Planning Association in Los Angeles.

“Our plan is one of only two projects in the entire nation selected to receive an award,” said Tribal Chairman Wayne Burke. “The Pyramid Lake Economic Development Plan is a great example of embracing a community vision and we hope that this national honor will help the Tribe further its economic development efforts.”
