Horse Rescued After Swimming Two Miles off California Coast
William, a seven-year-old Arabian horse, was spooked while filming a commercial Tuesday on a Southern California beach and ran into the water, finally being rescued after swimming some two miles, reports CNN.com.
Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol Officer Ryan Kelly said, "The initial call came in as a missing horse," before a few more similar calls came in. Fire-department personnel, lifeguards and a helicopter joined the search for William more than two miles offshore in the Santa Barbara Channel.
"Firefighters were able to hook the animal's reins with a boat hook and bring it alongside a paddleboat," the report said. The rescuers also placed floats beneath William's neck to help keep his mouth and nose above water.
"It took about two-and-a-half hours to escort the horse back to dry land and into the hands of a vet," Kelly said.
William was taken to a nearby animal clinic in the area before being released back to his owner.
