The Métis of British Columbia and beyond are mourning the passing of Marge Goulet, a “special friend and medicine woman” who advocated for elderly health.

“I had the pleasure of speaking with our elder before she passed,” said Beverly Lambert, a board member of the B.C. Métis Federation, in a statement from the organization. “Her message was that elders are not simply senior citizens and somehow defined by age only.”

Remembering her as inspirational, Lambert said, “She said a true Métis elder was a person who has wisdom and are the key Métis knowledge keepers. The true Métis elders are the people who have lived off the land. Many elders do not have higher education but they have far more to teach the world than people in suits do. She spoke about the need for our Métis people to learn off the land and find peace with nature. She spoke about the need for our Métis people to take care of the Métis elders, we must look after them, remember to support them fully to travel and share their knowledge.”

Goulet died of cancer on May 9, the B.C. Métis Federation said.

“Dear Marge, please know our Métis people cared for you so much and we will be eternally grateful. Thanks for sharing your medicine gifts and especially your love for your Métis culture and language,” Lambert said. “See you when we come home, peace be with you. God bless you on your journey.”
