The Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI) elected a new leader on Wednesday to finish out the term of Grand Chief Randall Phillips, who resigned suddenly last year.

Gord Peters, the new Grand Chief, will serve out the two remaining years of Phillips’s three-year term, the AIAI announced. He takes the reins from Deputy Grand Chief Denise Stonefish, who was filling in until the election.

“I had the opportunity to work together with Grand Chief Peters for almost a year now and continue to look forward in moving the Association and its Member Nations together,” she said in the AIAI statement.

Peters was elected at the AIAI’s Annual General Assembly, hosted this year on the Delaware Nation, Moravian of the Thames, which is also where Peters is from. The new Grand Chief “brings a multitude of experience to the position,” the AIAI said, including having served as the organization’s president. He also has taught at the University of Toronto, is a former Ontario Regional Vice-Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, was President and CEO of the Centre for Indigenous Sovereignty, and has worked “for and in First Nation communities for over 30 years,” the AIAI said.

“I am honored to be elected by the member Nations of the Association,” said Peters, who had been serving as deputy grand chief, in the AIAI statement. “We will continue with the work started in the area of Indigenous Reclamation and on the creation of a political framework to move forward.”

“The AIAI will no doubt benefit from the experience and stability of both the new Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief,” the AIAI statement said. “The next couple of years promise to be an exciting, if not busy time.”

The AIAI is on day one of its Annual General Assembly, which it is livestreaming over the Web from its site.
