Benicio Del Toro to Play an American Indian Soldier in Upcoming Film
Deadline.com reports that Benicio Del Toro will play the title role in Jimmy Picard, a film about the friendship between a Blackfeet Indian and a French psychoanalyst. The screenplay has been adapted from the story behind Reality and Dream: Psychotherapy Of A Plains Indian, a scholarly book written by George Devereaux and published in 1951.
Devereaux met Picard after the latter had returned from World War II and was suffering from depression and neuroses, and battling alcoholism. That, at least, is the story from Hispanically Speaking News; Deadline explains the plot a little more mysteriously, saying that Picard suffers from "various medical symptoms, none of which can be explained physically." Either way, the two men meet at Winter Hospital in Kansas and, over the course of 80 encounters develop a friendship.
Jimmy Picard will be directed by French director Arnaud Desplechin (A Christmas Tale, King & Queen) and begins shooting June 18 in Michigan. Del Toro will next be seen on the screen in Savages, directed by Oliver Stone, opening July 6.
