JOB: Eastern Washington University Seeks Full-Time Assistant Professor Tenure Track position in Visual Communication Design


Eastern Washington University and the Department of Engineering & Design invite applications for one full-time Assistant Professor tenure track position in Visual Communication Design to begin in September 2013.

The Visual Communication Design program is located in the Department of Engineering & Design and has two degree programs: BA in Visual Communication Design and a BFA in Visual Communication Design. The program has strong cross-disciplinary ties with art, computer science, technical communication, communication studies, journalism, film, and music. Students are expected to enter professional practice with a broad range of design skills and interdisciplinary knowledge. Eastern Washington University faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Primary areas of responsibility for this 9-month, full-time position include teaching undergraduate courses in the Visual Communication Design program, with an emphasis in interaction design. Additionally, the faculty member will be required to teach courses within the general visual communication design curriculum such as typography and history of design. Taking a leadership role in the program and developing collaborative and/or cross-disciplinary opportunities within the university and community are important aspects of this position. The faculty member will also participate in the promotion of the department through active advising and mentoring of students. A terminal degree is required for tenure.

Minimum Qualifications:

o MFA in visual communication design or graphic design or equivalent/advanced/terminal degree in related discipline is required and must be conferred no later than three months after start date

o Demonstrated grounding in traditional/formal design principle and processes

o Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of critical theory and mastery of technical skills as they pertains to visual communication design

o Strong evidence of design work, especially in the areas of interaction or motion design

o Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive relationships within the school, university, and professional community

o Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching; preference may be given to candidates who offer two or more years of this experience

o Demonstrated interest, ability or experience in promoting cultural competency and/or diversity

Preferred Qualifications:

o Relevant industry experience or professional practice; preference may be given to candidates who offer 2 or more years of this experience

o Record of active participation in professional and/or academic organizations.
