Users Outraged as Instagram Announces Privacy Changes

Watch out you #powwow Instagramers.

Monday Instagram announced their new terms of service that could result in advertisers using your photos for profit without even asking.

Effective January 16th, the Facebook-owned photo sharing app is changing several of its policies that may concern users, but this verbiage is what's sending users into an absolute uproar:

“Some or all of the Service may be supported by advertising revenue. To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.”

Furthermore, the new terms of service also state, in big, bold lettering, that any dispute between Instagram and users “will be resolved by binding, individual arbitration and you waive your right to participate in a class action lawsuit or class-wide arbitration.” Unless the user opts out of the provisions by notifying Instagram via snail-mail within 30 days of accepting these new terms.

Meaning all those beautiful powwow pictures you’ve been sharing will be available for Instagram to sell to their advertisers without any notice or compensation given to you and there won’t be anything you can do about it.

Thousands of outraged users have been revolting via Twitter feeds including #againstnewtos and #BoycottInstagram threatening to delete their accounts since the announcement. Most notably Noah Kalina, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's wedding photographer, who tweeted, “pro or not if a company wants to use your photos for advertising they need to TELL you and PAY you.” He continued to say, “The Instagram TOS is a contract no professional or non professional should ever sign. Walk away.”
