On Saturday afternoon (January 12), three esteemed Canadian musicalacts will play a free show at the National Museum of the American Indian, located at One Bowling Green on the southern tip of Manhattan, in New York City.

Don Amero, Digging Roots, and Elisapie have won acclaim and awards for modern and innovative music while holding on to cultural traditions that predate Canada and the U.S.

Singer-songwriter Don Amero hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is a critical favorite, having received awards in the categories of Male Entertainer of the Year (2012 Aboriginal People Choice Music Awards), Best Country Song (2012 Indian Summer Music Awards), Aboriginal Recording of the Year (2011 Western Canadian Music Awards), Best Folk Recording (2011 Native American Music Awards), Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year (2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards), Male Artist of the Year (2009 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards). Amero has just released his fourth album, Heart on My Sleeve. donamero.com

Digging Roots are a genre-defying act built around co-vocalists Raven Kanatakta and ShoShona Kish. As the name implies, the band's sound is rootsy and grounded, though the variety of influences is wide -- blues, reggae, funk combining to make what they call "odeimin music," or heartbeat music. Digging Roots are known for their tireless touring, but find the time to hit the studio as well: Their previous release, We Are, won a 2010 Juno Award. They're currently readying their latest, Love Drive, for a spring release. diggingrootsmusic.com

Elisapie sings in three languages: English, French, and Inuktitut, and brings her Inuk heritage to music that mixes pop, folk, and electronic styles and also draws on the great songwriters of the '60s and '70s: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. Her first album, There Will Be Stars, was distributed in the United States by EMI, and she expects to complete its sequel soon. elisapie.com

Each act has been alloted an hour to perform; the schedule is as follows:

3 pm: Digging Roots
4 pm: Elisapie
