Boutique Casino Will Increase Tourism, Create Jobs in Southern California’s High Desert
In March 2014, a new boutique casino is coming to the quaint desert enclave of Twentynine Palms, California, located just outside Palm Springs and nestled between Joshua Tree National Park and one of the country’s largest military training facilities—the United States Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.
The Southern California-based tribe behind the Tortoise Rock Casino expects the project to attract tourists to the area, drive the High-Desert economy, and create jobs in construction, retail and gaming employment.
“Not only are we using local contractors during construction, but Tortoise Rock will offer long-term stability in the Twentynine Palms community, with more than 100 full-time jobs expected to be filled within the next year,” Darrell Mike, chairman of the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians, said in a press release.
The Twenty-Nine Palms Band will break ground on the new facility in February, and anticipates construction to take nine months, with as much as $1.4 million expected to be spent on construction worker wages alone.
The new venue will offer 30,000 square feet of gaming, retail, dining, entertainment, and office space. The casino floor will feature 500 class III slot machines, five table games and two poker tables.
Location was key in the casino’s aesthetic and environmentally conscious design. The landscape complements the surrounding desert and is eco-friendly with high-tech recycling and water-reclamation features.
“We have taken great care to design a beautiful casino property that will only add to the community as a whole,” Mike said.
The tribe additionally owns and operates Spotlight 29 Casino (www.Spotlight29.com) in Coachella, featuring 2,000 slots, a variety of table games and headline entertainment.
