Staff Sgt. Jonathan D. Davis, 34, of Kayenta, Arizona, died February 22 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 32nd Georgian Liaison Team, Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Davis joined the Marine Corps in 1997 and served as a motor transport operations chief. It’s not immediately clear how he died.

His awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal.

Staff Sgt. Davis is the 13th Navajo member of the armed forces to lose their life during Operation Enduring Freedoom.

Davis was laid to rest this weekend. Among those in attendance to honor the memory of the fallen warrior were the Navajo-Hopi Honor Riders, who led the procession to the place of Davis's interment.
