Cleveland AIM to Again Protest at 'Progressive' Field Opening Game
The home opener for the Cleveland major-league baseball team begins at 4:05 pm/ET on April 8, and the Cleveland American Indian Movement will be on hand to protest the club's use of the name Indians and their offensive mascot, "Chief Wahoo." The group notes that they plan to muster at about 2 pm, and "We will meet at GATE C, which is on East 9th Street in downtown Cleveland. We usually disperse once the game has begun."
Further, "Our annual event protesting Cleveland Baseball's use of the 'Chief Wahoo' logo and 'Indians' team name. Since 1973, we have repeatedly objected to the degrading, racist depictions of Native people by Cleveland Baseball by demonstrating at every Opening Day. We continue to insist that Cleveland Baseball abolish it use of the clearly bigoted, racist, and shameful 'Indians' team name and the despicable 'Chief Wahoo' logo."
