Celebrate American Indian Awareness Month in Milwaukee
Even though nationally November is recognized as Native American Heritage Month, Milwaukee Area Technical College has traditionally celebrated American Indian Awareness Month in April.
The college’s Native American Student Movement has a full month of events planned including a concert with Wade Fernandez and the Black Wolf Group on April 19 and a screening of Crooked Arrows on April 10.
Those two events are the ones the movement’s president, Katherine Doxtater, Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans and Oneida, are most looking forward to.
She said Wade Fernandez and Black Wolf Group will be going on tour in Europe and she’s thankful her group was able to book them. “They are creating this pathway for future generations of musicians to follow in their amazing footsteps,” she said.
She can’t wait to screen the movie because it’s educational and entertaining.
“This movie really captures our current generation of Native American students so wonderfully as they are often in that gray area of ‘Where do we fit in?’”
Of the some 32,000 students at Milwaukee Area Technical College’s four Wisconsin campuses, about 700 are Native American.
“It is very important to us to highlight Native American events because in doing so, we are opening peoples’ eyes to who we are and what we are about,” Doxtater said. “During this month, we have been able to arrange a variety of events that truly highlight many of our key aspects of our culture.”
Other events include dance demonstrations, vendor sales, traditional food samplings, craft workshops, a Native veterans panel, and drum demonstrations.
“It’s not only important that we do these events and many more for the educational purpose, but it’s even more important to me personally that we do these events so the next generation of future college graduates see themselves in this type of environment,” Doxtater said. “It is a true passion of mine to bridge that gap that Native Americans and college have between them. It is in these events that Milwaukee Area Technical College can be seen as a great first option for Native American students to come here to begin their college journey.”
