Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers on ITB Berlin
Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers, based in Pipestone, Minnesota, were on hand at the AIANTA booth during the recent ITB Berlin travel trade show in Germany (read more: AIANTA Booth at ITB Berlin Is a Huge Success, Boon for Native Tourism). They even led special visitor U.S. Ambassador to Germany Philip Murphy in a Native dance to traditional music (watch more: Video: U.S. Ambassador to Germany Dances With Natives at ITB Berlin). ICTMN got reactions from the Pipemakers' Bud and Rona Johnston on their experience at ITB Berlin.
Bud Johnston: I have done this show for four years with AIANTA, We have had three writers the we met at this show come and got stories printed on the tribal history of our area which is the crossroads of the Indian world because of the great pipestone quarries here in Pipestone, Minnesota. The interest in the history of our tribal people of North America is enormous all over the world. Many, many people from Asia, especially China and Japan, have many questions that we try to answer. We offer possible tours starting in Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Chicago as well as a Culture Camp where you stay in a tipi and learn how we lived and make Native crafts. AIANTA does a great job in offering a platform for our tribal people to make what ever they care to share available to the public of the world.
Rona Johnston: We had a lot of interest in our culture camp with many people supportive of our Native American Indian people and interested in learning more about our rich and vibrant culture. We also had interest in our pow wow and visitors asking about visitingvarious Indian reservations, where they would be staying in the tribe's hotels, eating in their restaurants, and otherwise directly benefiting our Native people by supporting their business ventures.
