Scenes From the 43rd Annual Diné College Powwow
The 43rd annual Diné College Powwow in Tsaile, Arizona, held from April 12 to 13, featured 683 registered dancers. For the first time since 1992 it was run by students, who took over from school administrators and reenergized the proceedings with youthful enthusiasm. Thousands of people from as far away as Montana showed up to attend.
“I can’t believe there are so many people here,” Sherry Smith of Gallup, New Mexico said. “Look at all those men’s northern traditional dancers!” Smith and her family attended the pow wow for the first time after seeing announcements, including online postings—a first for the event.
With this year’s entry, the Diné College Powwow has by all appearances reestablished itself as a premier event on the busy Navajo Nation pow wow schedule.
