Second Annual Oklahoma Slam and Nashoba Skatepark Grand Opening
The largest skateboarding competition in Oklahoma returns to Poteau this weekend.
The Second Annual Oklahoma Slam presented by the Nashoba Youth Foundation kicks off Friday, May 24. Be at the Skatepark on Broadway in Poteau from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a skate camp with legendary pro skaters George W. Orton, from San Clemente, California, Wayne Bennett, and Moises Gonzales from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Also on hand will be sponsored skaters Bryant Chapo and Stone Bennett, both from Albuquerque, to set off the skate competitions on the Saturday, May 25.
The camp will provide skate tips from beginner to advanced levels and contest runs.
Competitions begin Saturday at 10 a.m. with beginner and intermediate comps until 3 p.m. then stick around for the Women's Open followed by an Open Bowl.
On Sunday, May 26 at 1 P.M. join the grand opening of Nashoba Skatepark in Heavener at the Blues Park which is just 11 miles from the Skatepark on Broadway.
The grand opening for the Nashoba Skatepark will include prizes, music by disc jockey Noah Bennett, food and merchandise vendors and more, Lisa Fabian, Nashoba Youth Foundation chairwoman, said. The park is being built by the Colorado-based Native Skateparks and eventually will be 14,000 square feet in size, she said.
“Having these skateparks in our region is a positive thing for these kids,” Fabian said. “Not only are these skateparks keeping kids off the streets, but they are benefitting these children healthwise. Teen suicide numbers, substance abuse numbers and the number of diabetic children decrease because of these skateparks.”
It is going to be an unforgettable and epic weekend!
