Moore Named Interim Director of Indian Education for South Dakota
After being vacant for three months, Keith Moore will step in and serve as the interim director of Indian education for South Dakota.
Moore, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, replaces Roger Campbell, who resigned on March 10.
From 2010 to 2012, Moore served as the director of the Bureau of Indian Education. Moore resigned in 2012 from the BIE to take a position as state director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in South Dakota, a position he still holds.
“It has been an extremely rewarding experience to lead the Bureau of Indian Education,” Moore said at the time. (Related story: “Bureau of Indian Education Director Resigning”)
He was also previously the chief diversity officer at the University of South Dakota.
Department of Education spokeswoman Mary Stadick Smith told the Argus Leader that Moore will not serve in a full-time capacity, and that a permanent person is needed to fill the position.
“Keith understands the issues surrounding the education of our Native American youth,” Education Secretary Melody Schopp said in a news release. “His expertise will be especially critical as we seek to close the achievement gap for our Native students.”
