Every home and building in the Laguna Pueblo’s six villages now have access to high-speed broadband internet service, thanks to a collaboration between Sacred Wind, a privately owned telecommunications company in New Mexico, and the Pueblo of Laguna Utility Authority.

Owned by the Pueblo of Laguna, the project was funded through six separate, coordinated Community Connect Grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of its Rural Utility Service broadband grant/loan programs.

“Many of our residents and most of the villages in Laguna Pueblo did not have access to broadband service,” Leonard Otero, director of the Pueblo’s Utility Authority, said in a press release. “Our goal was to provide broadband access to all residents, public facilities and businesses within Laguna Pueblo. This service means access to academic, medical, employment and other types of valuable information not previously accessible before.”

The network, built by Sacred Wind Communications, was constructed to deliver broadband capacity to each village. A microwave tower, monopole, or roof mounted radio antenna has been constructed in each village. Sacred Wind Telesolutions will serve as the Internet Service Provider and will train the Pueblo of Laguna Utility Authority in all service aspects.

“We are honored to be a part of this project,” said John Badal, president/CEO of Sacred Wind Communications. “By providing broadband access to the Pueblo government and public facilities and to the residents, we are increasing quality of life and offering access to information.”

The Pueblo of Laguna Utility Authority will manage the broadband system and different service packages will be available to residents. Several additional companies aided in the success of the project including Albuquerque Public Schools, Mid-State Consulting, Midwestern Construction, Fujitsu, CenturyLink, NeoNova, Marron & Associates and Continental Divide Electric Coop.
