Will Johnny Depp spend millions to return Wounded Knee to its rightful owners?

Depp Wants to Buy Wounded Knee and Return It to Indians

Buried in this Daily Mail feature on Johnny Depp is this tidbit that could pay big dividends to American Indians:

"Such is Depp’s commitment to the Native American cause, he is planning to spend millions of his own money to return land, Wounded Knee, in South Dakota, to their ownership.

The site, the scene of an 1890 massacre, is up for sale for $3.9 million. Local Native Americans say they cannot afford to buy it. Depp is outraged.

"It’s very sacred ground and many atrocities were committed against the Sioux there. And in the 1970s there was a stand-off between the Feds (Federal government) and the people who should own that land. This historical land is so important to the Sioux culture and all I want to do is buy it and give it back. Why doesn’t the government do that?"

Is he really prepared to pay for the land?

"I am doing my best to make that happen. It’s land they were pushed on to and then they were massacred there. It really saddens me."

Much more to come on this developing story.

I hope this man does this good deed. He will be remembered in a very good way should he carry out his word. A very long time indeed my friends. Johnny, we know you are good for the money! I am going to stay tuned for this story's outcome folks. This story really made my day after a number of weeks of bad news for our peoples here & there. Johnny, I am looking forward to reading the next part of this story when it says the land has been returned to the people with a clear deed forever!

I love Johnny Depp for his acting ability. I think he's the best we have. Now, with this desire to buy and turn over Wounded Knee to Indians, I have even more reason to adore him. What a wonderful, generous and meaningful gesture. Bravo, Depp, you are a man with a heart and I'm proud of you!

If Johnny Depp can raise the funds to purchase it from the scofflaw owner -- then thank you. There is no need to sign any petition for him to "keep his word." We should be thankful he is even considering it. Let's not lose track of who the real thieves here are: 1st, the US government for stealing it in violation of the Treaty of 1868; 2nd, the atrocious demand of its current owner, knowing full well the asking price has no basis in their fictional real estate game, but being fully aware of the priceless value of this land to the Lakota nation. The just solution if for the US government to purchase it themselves and give it back to the Lakotas. They're afraid to do so because it would set a PRECEDENT and reveal the legal and just grounds the Lakota nation has for demanding the return of ALL the lands stolen after the Treaty of 1868. In the meantime, thank you Johnny for even considering arranging a purchase, even though what the real criminals and thieves should be doing, is simply give it back with respect and humility, considering the golden opportunity they have been presented to do the right thing -- which they remain completely blind to.

jonny is a good man and is worth probably worth well over 100 million dollars.. His pleasure boat is worth more than what this land cost.. it would be a great gesture... Now, all jonny has to do is get past the need that most white folks have built into them to go back on their word... it seems to be ingrained in their DNA... for some reason it gets them off. I hope he can rise above it.
