Video: Being Native American From a Student’s Perspective
In this video, filmed at Fort Lewis College—a former Indian boarding school—in Durango, Colorado, students answer questions about being Native American.
Students discuss what they love about being Native—many say family, traditions and the food—and the struggles they’ve been through.
One student discussed the problem of “being an apple… white on the inside, red on the outside… you’re told to go off to get this education so that you can come back to help your people… they’ll say that you’re not good enough or that you’re trying to be white or that you’re trying to show off.”
